WELCOMEWelcome to the Jackson Township Lions Club website. Our club was chartered on September 13, 1960 and has been busy working to prevent blindness and help community members who need eye care ever since our inception. We hope you will find this site informative and that you will communicate your thoughts and needs to us so that we may better SERVE the residents of Jackson Township.
FOCUS OF LIONS CLUBSLions began in Chicago, Illinois in 1917. A young insurance agent, Melvin Jones, organized a group of local businessmen. Their motive was to expand their horizons beyond professionalism to the betterment of their communities and the world at large. The first convention was held in Dallas, Texas on October 8-10, 1917 and a constitution and by-laws were adopted. The organization became international in 1920 with the formation of the Windsor/Canada Lions Club. In 1920, the international convention was held at Cedar Point, Ohio. Helen Keller was the guest speaker and she challenged the Lions to become her Knights of the Blind in the crusade against blindness. This challenge was accepted and today is the main focus of Lions Clubs worldwide. Joining the Lions Club makes you a member of the largest service organization in the world. Our goal is to help individuals with all facets of vision related care to prevent blindness through contributions to eye research and to assist with the purchase of pilot dogs and associated training for the blind. We also recycle used eyeglasses for use by individuals in foreign countries, who may otherwise not be able to buy new lenses. A variety of fund raising projects are held throughout the year to accomplish these goals.
